Email marketing is a tricky business with a lot of possible pitfalls you will need to look out for. Simply by learning how to avoid making these five email marketing mistakes, you will be far ahead of most other email marketers.
Here are some of the worst email marketing mistakes you can make, and also some tips on how to avoid making these email marketing errors in the first place. If you’re making these rookie mistakes, correct them now.
Not delivering valuable content
In many ways, the phrases ’email marketing’ and ‘relationship marketing’ are virtually synonymous. It is all about building trust and behaving more like a friend than a marketer. The best way to do this is striving to send valuable content and offers to your readers.
Do not hammer your email list with promotions believing you will make a fast buck — sure, you will earn some cash that one time, but the durability of your listing will suffer. People that abuse their list never stay around long.
Not sticking to a regular schedule
The most prosperous list owners are the ones which email their subscribers frequently. Whether that is once a day or once a week does not matter, so long as the frequency is kept up. What do you think would happen if you, as an instance, were to email your list weekly for 6 weeks, then all of a sudden take a three-month break?
The solution is that a large part of your readers will have forgotten about you and your own list, practically forcing you to start from scratch again. The solution? Don’t let your list go stale in the first place. Keep to a regular schedule.
Not being mobile friendly
Nowadays lots of people are reading their email primarily on their tablet or smartphone versus the computer, and you will need to ensure that your emails look as great there as on a PC. It is usually easy enough, particularly if you’re mainly sending out emails in plain-text, which I always suggest.
The simplest way to do it’s maintaining formatting beyond standard tags like bold and italics to an absolute minimum. Also, keep images small and fast loading. You don’t know how all that fancy HTML is going to render for other people, so don’t do it.
Not allowing people to unsubscribe
Many newbie entrepreneurs make the email marketing mistake of attempting to hide the link which allows people to unsubscribe. That is a big mistake, as most people will only flag the mails as spam when that occurs. In the long term, being junk flagged too frequently can make you get banned from the email service provider. Stay compliant and make the links easy to find, you are not going to lose some valuable subscribers anyway.
Not using stats to your advantage
Finally, a typical email marketing error that even experienced internet marketers do isn’t looking at reports and stats and figuring out what people react to. Usually, it’s easy to tell by simply looking at open and unsubscribe rates, so don’t neglect to do so!
Email marketing isn’t rocket science, but it does take some common sense. The less email marketing mistakes you make, all things being equal, the more email subscribers you’ll convert into customers. So listen to my email marketing advice and you’ll be ahead of the curve.
